Pygmy Goats

Pygmy goats are compact, handsome animals, known for their small, dog-like size, and their hardy health. Although they are too small for farm uses – their size limiting their overall milk production and amount of meat they provide – they are easy to raise and make for great 4H projects.

One of the most beneficial aspects of the pygmy goat to the prospective owner is the variety of its diet. While goats in general are known for their broad diets, pygmy goats in particular will eat virtually whatever is put in front of them. Studies have shown that they are equally fond of sweet, salty, sour, and bitter flavors, meaning that there is virtually no plant that they won't eat. And because of their smaller size and rugged demeanor, they require smaller and more spartan accommodations than other breeds.

While pygmy goats produce less milk than their larger cousins, it is merely a size factor. By volume, pygmy goats have a very high milk production, and are known for their sweet-tasting milk. At the height of lactation, they may produce as much as 2/3 of a gallon of milk per day.

Pygmy goats are calm and social, and make great companion animals. Because they are an inexpensive solution to the loneliness of other animals, they are often kept around racing tracks and other zoos. Owners often find them calm and easygoing.
